Xenon-VR is launching a medical grade virtual reality headset, Xenon-1, to improve visual field assessments for optometrists and their patients, according to a press release from the company.

This new patented mobile headset uses liquid lens technology that adjusts to an individual patient’s refraction error, and its major advantage is that it eliminates the need to maintain the patient’s chin and forehead in a fixed position for the duration of the test, according to the release.

The Xenon-1 includes various modules through clip-on additions: module 1 for visual field testing includes the 24-2, 30-2 and 10-2 tests; module 2 includes an autorefractor and phoropter. All tests are expected to be reimbursable using traditional CPT codes, according to the release.

“Significant time savings occur when a patient does not need to move between rooms or individual pieces of equipment while performing the Xenon-VR visual field test, autorefraction and subjective refraction,” Steve Susanibar, cofounder of Xenon-VR, said in the release. “After the technician places the headset on the patient, the device instructs the patient on how to proceed with testing. Visual instructions are also provided for hearing-impaired patients.”

The initial launch of Xenon-1 is expected in the second quarter of this year for clinical studies, and commercial availability is expected by end of year, the company said.
